Since 1970, Shenandoah River Outfitters — near Luray — has been providing great family fun on the storied Shenandoah River. Visitors enjoy the cool waters while floating past farmlands made famous in legend and song while sunning, fishing, or simply dreaming of a time long gone. There are sections for all levels of adventure. The river is great for beginners with easy riffles, flat water, short rapids and one larger rapid for the thrill- seekers. Canoe, kayak, raft and tube rentals come with life jackets, paddles, shuttle, map and safety instruction.
In their 47th year, SRO has grown to be the largest and most experienced canoe, kayak and tube outfitter in the mid-Atlantic region. Their location on the most scenic area, the south fork of the Shenandoah River, borders George Washington National Forest. SRO is the closest outfitter to the town of Luray and the major attractions -Luray Caverns and the visitor facilities along Skyline in Shenandoah National Park.
Along your journey, be on the lookout for a glimpse of the region’s regal wildlife. Eagles still nest in the area and can be occasionally be seen soaring above the river in search of food. Check for the eagle’s nest between Point 14 and 15 on the west bank. Other large birds of the river valley include the rare osprey, snowy egret and great blue heron. More common sights are the turkey vultures and any one of five varieties of hawks. Resident owls range in size from the great horned owl to the tiny screech owl.
Although there is not enough nesting cover for many varieties of water fowl, the merganser often make their home here. Other water birds seen along the river include the Black, Teal, Mallard, Golden Eyed, Buffle Head and Wood Ducks, as well as migrating Canada geese. The sights of a diving Kingfisher or an outsized Pileated Woodpecker are special treats of the valley and surrounding woodlands. Wild turkey and the Virginia Whitetail Deer can be seen feeding in open fields throughout the area.
For an overnight excursion, SRO offers nine Shenandoah River log cabins open year around. Each has the perfect spot to relax on the river bank and we are pet friendly. Camp Outback is a tent campground equipped with hot shower, picnic tables and fire rings.
Adventure beckon’s this summer! Plan a great sun-filled day on the river or spend a whole vacation in the place called Luray.
