Luray Caverns 130th Anniversary of Discovery
and Grand Illumination - August 9, 2008

The air in Virginia will be filled with music amidst the breathtaking backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains during a celebration of the 1878 discovery for this world-renowned Shenandoah Valley landmark. Anniversary remarks and special activities begin at 11am followed by live performances featuring an array of music genres through the entire afternoon at the Entrance Pavilion.

This year’s top act hails from Seattle, Washington. Jake Landry and Annie Ford make up the duo Slim Pickens Annie grew up near Marshall, Virginia. She began playing the violin at age 11 and fell in love with Scottish and Irish music. After moving to New Orleans, she continued to play different styles including latin, gypsy jazz, folk and Irish. Jake started playing bass at 14 and the guitar when he was 16. He studied the old-time music styles including ragtime, blues and mountain music. After moving to California, Jake became an extraordinary picker and developed a strong and resonant voice. Together they have created a unique sound both vocally and instrumentally.

Also scheduled to appear, will be James Leva (of Purgatory Mountain) and Carol Elizabeth Jones with Matty Olwell. James is a prolific composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, whose virtuosity on fiddle, banjo and guitar blends the melodies of the Appalachian lands into one powerful musical version. Carol lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and has made her mark as a singer of traditional mountain music and as a writer of new songs in the old tradition. She helped to bring vocals back into stringband music and with James, has recorded three acclaimed albums of original material.

Returning again to round out the talent list will be, an annual favorite, the “high energy” bluegrass of the popular, local band Virginia Run.

The main attraction throughout Discovery Day will be the Grand Illumination Tours of this U.S. Natural Landmark. The first Grand Illumination took place in 1878, with The New York Herald reporting that a “thousand candles illuminated the antechambers making it nearly as bright as day.” Experience the thrill of adventure from this bygone era as period-costumed guides tell of Luray Caverns’ storied past in special candle lighted sections throughout the caverns. Tours depart frequently from 9am to 7pm.

A final highlight in the dark evening skies will be the sights and sounds of a massive fireworks display. This spectacle will be coordinated with a recital by David Breneman from the Luray Singing Tower, a 47-bell carillon located on the event’s perimeter.
