In August of 1878, Luray Caverns Were First Discovered
The New York Herald reported a “thousand candles illuminated the antechambers making it nearly as bright as day.”
Sounds magical, doesn’t it? You won’t need a time machine to experience the enchantment found in the caverns 145 years ago.
Join our annual Discovery Day celebration that will begin with live music that can heard across the campus and then take a special Grand Illumination Tour, where interpreters dressed in period costumes lead you through candlelit sections of the caverns and tell about the discovery of this wondrous landmark here in Luray, Virginia. Amidst the magic of the caverns, you may be surprised at what you yourself will discover. The day will close with a spectacular fireworks display held at dusk.
