For adventurous spirits and seasoned hikers, a day on Old Rag Mountain is a rite of passage—and one of Shenandoah National Park’s most thrilling (and demanding) experiences. With rugged rock scrambles, dramatic elevation gains, and sweeping summit views, Old Rag earns its reputation as the Park’s most popular and most challenging hike.

The Scramble is Real

The journey up Old Rag is an obstacle course crafted by nature. About three-quarters of the way to the top, the trail transitions into a thrilling rock scramble. Climbers make their way through narrow crevices and over massive boulders. It’s part of the adventure that makes this hike unforgettable. But it’s also what makes it strenuous and potentially hazardous.

What to Expect

The loop is approximately 9.4 miles, with steep switchbacks on the ascent and a more gradual descent along the Saddle Trail and Weakley Hollow Fire Road. Be prepared for false summits—several spots will trick you into thinking you’ve reached the top. You’ll know you’ve made it when you see the iconic Old Rag Mountain elevation sign. It’s the perfect place for a well-earned break and a 360° view lunch.

Safety First

Old Rag is the site of numerous search and rescue missions every year. Hikers should be in good physical condition, carry plenty of water, wear proper footwear, and allow plenty of daylight hours to complete the loop. Weather can change quickly, so check the forecast and be prepared for sudden storms.

Ticketing Required: Know Before You Go

Due to the hike’s popularity and environmental impact, the day-use ticket system remains in effect for 2025:

  • Tickets required March 1–November 30
  • 800 tickets available daily
    • 400 released 30 days in advance
    • 400 released 5 days in advance
  • Tickets cost $1 and must be purchased in advance at Recreation.gov
  • Entrance fees still apply
  • A ticket does not guarantee parking—arrive early

Ready for the Challenge?

Old Rag isn’t just a hike—it’s an adventure. If you’re up for the challenge, the views and the sense of accomplishment are unbeatable. Just plan smart, hike safe, and be ready for one of the most memorable treks in Virginia.
