In August of 1878, Luray Caverns were first discovered.
The New York Herald reported, “A thousand candles illuminated the antechambers making it nearly as bright as day.”
On August 12th, 2023, you won’t need a time machine to experience the magic found in the caverns 145 years ago.
Join our annual Discovery Day celebration that will begin with live music that can be heard across the campus, and then take a Grand Illumination Tour, where interpreters dressed in period costumes lead you through candlelit sections of the caverns and tell about the discovery of this unique landmark here in Luray, Virginia.
Amidst the magic of the caverns, you may be surprised at what you will discover. Hear the trio Augusta Blue as they perform at the Shenandoah Heritage Village from 1pm to 4pm. The day will close with a spectacular fireworks display held at dusk.
