Virginia truly is for craft beer lovers.
Beer lovers and craft breweries nationwide are taking notice. In the last decade, the Virginia craft beer scene has exploded — creating social spots in cities and rural communities across the state where beer lovers from far and wide come to soak in some of the local flavor.
Luray’s Hawksbill Brewery has joined the agritourism movement with its opening in 2017 in the downtown historic district. Thirsty customers — both local and those from further afield —stop by to relax and enjoy a variety of beer on tap. It’s no wonder the Hawksbill motto is “we brew community.” That sort of thinking emphasizes Hawksbill’s small-town roots. The brewery partners with local non-profits to welcome both locals and tourists to the area.
Founders David Sours, Kevin Crisler, and Jim Turner started planning the brewery in 2015. The 22 Zerkel Street building in downtown Luray became available. Because of its history as an ice storage facility and creamery from the 1940s, it was a natural fit for a brewery. The company was formed in 2016, and the process of creating great beer began.
