Prepare for an early wake-up call on the tight downhill par-5, No. 1 signature hole that parallels the Shenandoah River. Designer Mal Purdy obviously believed you can’t start the fun soon enough. The tree-lined fairway also boasts a wide swath of the Shenandoah River flowing down its left side. About 225 yards out, the terrain begins a sharp slope for about 75 yards. Shots hit slightly left hit the slope and funnel off that way; shots a little right hit the slope and scatter right. Bunkers guard both sides of the entrance to the green, which has enough undulation to make you wish you hadn’t been so quick to leave the putting green. Survive the first few punches, however, and the course softens, allowing you to wield the driver.
The back nine starts with another right and turning par 4, which eventually gives way to some spectacular open holes, a few with extreme mountain backdrops.
The first thing you notice about No. 11 at Caverns Country has nothing to do with golf. With the Blue Ridge Mountains spread out before you in a 360-degree vista, it’s an image that will stay with you for years. The first shot crosses a large fairway depression to a hilltop landing where the hole doglegs right. A downhill shot to an elevated green protected on both sides by trees and a bunker on the right side is beautifully framed by the imposing George Washington National Forest in the background. Hit a good short iron shot and watch it soar against the distant mountains, hanging against the green lushness for a split second, then making the perfect landing on the putting surface.
